Equipment that does not strand you

Trailers, ratings, bumper pulls — the cheat code in practice.

Do this now

Match the trailer to the load, stay under the plate ratings, and keep a spare trailer type so the week does not die when one style of freight dries up.

Must-have

  • Reliable truck. This is heavy-duty work.
  • Trailer GVWR visible. Do not cover the plate.
  • Securement that meets Part 393 for that commodity.
  • More than one trailer type if you want consecutive days.

The rule

  • 49 CFR 393

Parts and accessories. Cargo securement is where hot shots get Level 1 hits.

What they don’t publish

  • Every load is a potential good load — if it is legal and safe. Speed without securement is a CSA event.
  • Bumper pulls are the consecutive-work loophole. They are also how you stay inside short-haul if you choose them on purpose.
  • Cheap axles on a gooseneck will teach you the equipment chapter in one night on I-4.
