Highway Safety
Holder view of the FMCSA Highway Safety web app (SMS) and the SAFER snapshot your insurance agent already has open. Isolated from the rest of the desk so you use it the way underwriters do.
Tap pull to load the public snapshot for your USDOT, then open SMS in the official Highway Safety app. Do not look up another carrier’s authority as if it were yours.
Why this is an insurance desk
What your agent actually opens
Before a quote or a renewal, the agency that holds the owner-operator policy pulls SAFER (authority, insurance filing, inspections) and SMS — the Highway Safety web app (BASIC alerts). They are not guessing. They are reading this.
Alert ≠ conviction. Alert = money.
A BASIC over the intervention threshold is an SMS alert. Public users see the flag. Carriers who log in see the percentile. Insurers treat an alert like a rate-up or a decline until you can explain it.
New Entrant is a surcharge lane
First 18 months, you are in the New Entrant Safety Assurance Program. Markets are thinner. Keep inspections clean. A failed audit can shut the MC — and cancel the reason they insured you.
Stale MCS-150 is a red flag
If the snapshot still shows an old yard, old unit count, or old mileage, the file looks unmanaged. Update the MCS-150, then send the agent the new snapshot.
The seven BASICs — holder language
Unsafe Driving
Speeding, reckless, phone. The first thing a underwriter smells.
Hours of Service
ELD and log hits. Hotshot short-haul mistakes live here.
Driver Fitness
Medical card, CDL class, disqualification. A missing med card is a quote killer.
Drugs & Alcohol
Clearinghouse and Part 382. CDL combos only — still asked at renewal.
Vehicle Maintenance
Lights, brakes, tires, securement. Where bumper-pulls collect Level 1 points.
Hazmat
Ignore unless you placard. Do not wander into this BASIC by accident.
Crash Indicator
Not fully public. Your agent still sees crash involvement. Report clean, or DataQs it.
Use it this month
- Look up your USDOT in SMS and SAFER the same week every month (SMS refreshes monthly).
- Screenshot the SMS overview and send it to your insurance agent before renewal — do not wait for them to find a surprise.
- If an inspection is wrong, file DataQs. Leaving bad data on the snapshot is how premiums stick.
- Walk-around lights and securement. Vehicle Maintenance is the hotshot BASIC.
- If you added a heavier trailer, re-check CDL and the MCS-150 fleet count the same week.
