FMCSA / DOT mandate

What must be in the truck

The cab packet. If you cannot hand it over, you do not have it.

Do this now

Build one folder. If a trooper asks, you hand the folder. No digging through texts.

Must-have

  • CDL or valid license for the class you are actually driving.
  • DOT medical card if you are in a CMV in interstate commerce.
  • Registration / cab card (and IRP cab card if apportioned).
  • Proof of insurance. MCS-90 in the packet.
  • Annual inspection report(s).
  • ELD info packet / exemption time records.
  • Bills of lading / load paperwork for the current freight.
  • Oversize/overweight permits if the load needs them.

The rule

  • 49 CFR 391.41

Physical qualifications. Interstate CMV drivers generally need a medical examiner’s certificate.

  • 49 CFR 395.22

ELD user information must be on board.

What they don’t publish

  • A PDF on your phone that will not open in the sun is not a packet.
  • Medical card: non-CDL interstate CMV drivers still get asked. Carry it.
  • The playbook said it: the books are the business. The cab packet is the roadside version of the books.
